Experimental observation of decoherence

چکیده

In the 1980s, theoretical estimates showed that on macroscopic scales I decoherence occurs extremely rapidly, thus effectively precluding the observation of nonclassical I superposition states [21–23]. This immediately led to the question of how we may experimentally observe the continuous action of decoherence and thus the smooth transition from quantum to classical. Several challenges have to be overcome in the design of such experiments. The system is to be prepared in a nonclassical superposition of mesoscopically or even macroscopically distinguishable states (ISchrödinger-cat state) with a sufficiently long decoherence time such that the gradual action of decoherence can be resolved. The existence of the superposition must be verified, and a scheme for monitoring decoherence must be devised that introduces a minimal amount of additional decoherence. Starting in the mid-1990s, several such experiments have been successfully performed, using physical systems such as:

We report on the experimental observation of environment induced decoherence in the quantum deltakicked rotor. Ultracold cesium atoms are subjected to a pulsed standing wave of near resonant light. Spontaneous scattering of photons destroys dynamical localization thereby giving rise to a quantum diffusion, which approaches the classical diffusion with an increasing degree of decoherence. This t...

Observation of decoherence-induced exchange symmetry breaking in an entangled state

One of the most intriguing features of entanglement is that entangled quantum systems exhibit exchange symmetry; that is, local quantum operations on the subsystems may be interchanged without affecting the quantum state. In this work, we investigate whether the exchange symmetry is preserved for the weak (or partial collapse) measurement, a type of quantum operation, in the presence of decoher...

Observation of an anomalous decoherence effect in a quantum bath at room temperature

The decoherence of quantum objects is a critical issue in quantum science and technology. It is generally believed that stronger noise causes faster decoherence. Strikingly, recent theoretical work suggests that under certain conditions, the opposite is true for spins in quantum baths. Here we report an experimental observation of an anomalous decoherence effect for the electron spin-1 of a nit...

Decoherence and recoherence in a vibrating rf SQUID

We study an rf SQUID, in which a section of the loop is a freely suspended beam that is allowed to oscillate mechanically. The coupling between the rf SQUID and the mechanical resonator originates from the dependence of the total magnetic flux threading the loop on the displacement of the resonator. Motion of the latter affects the visibility of Rabi oscillations between the two lowest energy s...

Sharpening the second law of thermodynamics with the quantum Bayes theorem.

We prove a generalization of the classic Groenewold-Lindblad entropy inequality, combining decoherence and the quantum Bayes theorem into a simple unified picture where decoherence increases entropy while observation decreases it. This provides a rigorous quantum-mechanical version of the second law of thermodynamics, governing how the entropy of a system (the entropy of its density matrix, par...
